After breakfast our half-day tour departs for Hagar Qim Temples. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was first excavated in 1839 and is believed to date back to 3600 B.C. These impressive standing stones are set on a hilltop overlooking the sea with the largest megalith reaching a height of 5.2m and weighing over 20 tonnes.
Next stop is the old capital of Mdina sitting on top of one of the highest hills in Malta. One of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city it has a fascinating mixture of medieval and baroque styles. Much of the original architecture has been preserved and there will be time to wander through the narrow cobbled streets before our return to the hotel.
The afternoon is free for you to relax. Late afternoon there will be a scientific lecture at the hotel (2 hours). Tonight, we have dinner in Valletta in one of the city’s fabulous restaurants. By night thousands of lights show off the city’s stunning architecture.
Saturday 11 May
Today’s full day tour starts in Valletta, Europe’s smallest capital and a World Heritage Site. First stop are the beautiful Upper Barraka Gardens. Created in 1775 on a bastion at the highest point on Valletta’s fortifications, they provide a perfect vantage point for a view over the Three Cities. From here a short walk brings us to St John’s Co-Cathedral, a gem of baroque art and architecture dedicated to St John the Baptist. We leave Valletta by traditional Maltese boat for a picturesque cruise across the Grand Harbour to Birgu one of the oldest areas of Malta’s Three Cities. Dating back to the 16th century, lunch is at the delightful family-owned Tal Petut restaruant. Afterwards a walk through the oldest parts of Birgu will take us to the waterfront for our journey back to the hotel. Late afternoon there will be the second scientific lecture (2 hours).
